Kerala's political landscape witnessed a noteworthy development in the recent local body elections, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) making its presence felt through the victory of three women candidates. The elections, held in two phases on December 9 and 11, 2025, saw the results being declared on December 13, 2025.
The AAP, which contested in as many as 380 seats, saw Beena Kurian win Ward 13 of Karimkunnam Grama Panchayat, Sini Antony secure Ward 16 of Mullenkolly Grama Panchayat, and Smitha Luke emerge victorious in Ward 4 of Uzhavoor Grama Panchayat. This marks the first time AAP has won seats in Kerala's local body elections.
The success of these women candidates was lauded by ex-Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi, who hailed it as "a strong example of women empowerment". Oberoi further added that the victory reflects the dedication of party volunteers and the vision of AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal. Kejriwal also congratulated the winning candidates and stated that the win reflects growing public trust in AAP's politics.
These local body elections saw a total of 75,644 candidates contesting, with women constituting 52.36% of the candidates. The elections were conducted to elect members to grama, block, and district panchayats, as well as municipalities and municipal corporations. In preparation for the 2025 elections, a ward delimitation exercise was undertaken based on the 2011 Census, increasing the number of wards from 21,900 to 23,612.
While the AAP celebrated its small but significant entry into Kerala's local governance, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) emerged as the dominant force in the elections. The UDF won the majority of seats in Grama Panchayats, Block Panchayats, District Panchayats, Municipalities, and Corporations. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a historic win in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, ending the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) 45-year hold. The LDF won Kozhikode Corporation.
The AAP's initial foray into Kerala politics comes after the party had focused on building a strong base in the state. The party had previously stated its intention to contest in local bodies across all 16 Assembly constituencies in Malappuram, with the aim of laying a foundation for the Assembly elections scheduled for the following year.
The results of the 2025 local body elections indicate shifts in Kerala's political dynamics, with the AAP's entry, the UDF's dominance, and the NDA's breakthrough in Thiruvananthapuram. The performance of various political fronts in these elections is expected to have implications for the upcoming Assembly elections.
