Assam Police and the Border Security Force (BSF) conducted a joint operation on Sunday, December 21, 2025, to send 19 illegal immigrants back to Bangladesh. The individuals were apprehended from different locations within Nagaon and Karbi Anglong.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has described the action as a "full Doomsday moment" for infiltrators. He conveyed a stern message to those residing illegally in Assam, emphasizing that their "endgame is guaranteed". However, the Chief Minister did not specify the exact border crossing used for the deportation.

The Assam government has repeatedly stated its commitment to maintaining an infiltration-free state, with claims of pushing back 35-40 people each week. In October 2025, the state cabinet approved a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950. This SOP aims to provide guidance to district commissioners and senior superintendents of police (SSPs) in identifying and expelling illegal immigrants from Assam, addressing the continuous issue of illegal immigration from neighboring countries.

BSF has increased its vigilance along the 1,885-km-long India-Bangladesh border in the Northeast, particularly since the disturbances began in Bangladesh last year. Assam Police are also maintaining a high alert along the border to prevent illegal entry into the state and ensure that individuals without valid citizenship documents are deported.

Earlier in the year, in May 2025, the BSF reported thwarting an infiltration attempt by a group of Bangladeshi nationals in Assam’s South Salmara Mankachar district. The BSF stated that the individuals were attempting to cross the border and move towards the border fence when they were challenged and stopped. Simultaneously, reports emerged of Assam police conducting verification drives and rounding up individuals suspected of lacking proper documentation to prove Indian citizenship.
