In the wake of recent calls for Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to be considered as a potential Prime Ministerial candidate, her husband, Robert Vadra, has weighed in on the matter, acknowledging her potential and the public's admiration for her. Vadra's comments come after Congress MP Imran Masood publicly supported Priyanka Gandhi for the top job, drawing comparisons between her and her grandmother, the late Indira Gandhi.
Masood stated that if Priyanka Gandhi became Prime Minister, she would retaliate against India's enemies similar to how Indira Gandhi did. He was reacting to allegations from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that Priyanka Gandhi had not spoken strongly enough about atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh.
Vadra responded to these statements by noting the increasing demands within the Congress party for Priyanka to assume a more prominent role. Speaking to IANS, Vadra stated, "Everyone has their own demands. There are demands from various quarters that Priyanka should come forward". He also noted that there are demands for him to enter politics as well. However, he emphasized that the focus should be on the pressing issues facing the country.
Vadra highlighted Priyanka's political acumen, noting she has learned a great deal from her grandmother, father, mother, and brother. "When she speaks, she speaks from the heart. I think she has a bright future in politics and a bright future in changing what is required on the ground," Vadra told PTI. He expressed confidence in her ability to address key issues impacting the public and make a significant impact in the political landscape.
The BJP has responded to Masood's remarks by criticizing Rahul Gandhi. BJP spokesperson Shahzad Poonawalla suggested that Masood's statement indicates a lack of faith in Rahul Gandhi's leadership. Poonawalla went on to say that Rahul Gandhi has not just lost the public vote; his allies have rejected him.
Priyanka Gandhi, a member of the Nehru-Gandhi family, has been involved in Indian politics for a long time. She is the daughter of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, and the sister of Rahul Gandhi. She began her political career assisting her mother and brother in their campaigns. In 2019, she formally entered politics as the General Secretary of the Indian National Congress for Eastern Uttar Pradesh and later took charge of the entire state in 2020. Currently, she is a General Secretary of Congress party which has fielded her from Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency.
Throughout her career, Priyanka Gandhi has been actively involved in social and political initiatives aimed at women's empowerment, promoting education, and advocating for marginalized communities.
While refraining from directly commenting on Priyanka Gandhi's potential future as Prime Minister, Robert Vadra's statements underscore the growing sentiment within the Congress party and among the public that she is a force to be reckoned with in Indian politics.
