This illegal migration path, fraught with dangers and exploitation, leads from South Asia through various countries in Latin America, ultimately aiming for the US border. Lured by the promise of lucrative jobs and a higher quality of life, these individuals often find themselves trapped in a web of debt, fear, and uncertainty.
The "donkey route" is fueled by a shadow network of unscrupulous agents who exploit the desperation of young Indians seeking opportunities abroad. These agents paint a rosy picture, promising legal entry, work visas, and stable jobs, charging exorbitant fees ranging from Rs 40 lakh to Rs 80 lakh. Families often mortgage or sell land and take on massive loans to finance these journeys, unaware of the life-threatening risks that lie ahead. The reality is far removed from the agents' promises, with migrants facing treacherous terrains, exploitation, and constant fear of detection.
The journey itself is a harrowing ordeal. Migrants are often transported through multiple countries, including Brazil, Colombia, and Panama, before reaching Mexico. They are forced to walk through dense jungles like the Panama jungle, facing dangerous wildlife, and risk of starvation. Many have recounted witnessing death and suffering along the way, with some travelers perishing due to injuries or lack of resources. Overcrowded and unstable boats are often used for sea crossings, further endangering the lives of these migrants.

According to CNA, about 3,360 Indians have been deported between January and November of this year, a sharp increase compared to 617 in all of 2023.
