DK Shivakumar's Anti-Kerala Remark Ignites Political Storm: BJP Blasts Congress Amid Vijayan Spat.

‘We Don't Want Keralites’: DK Shivakumar’s Jibe At Vijayan Sparks Row, BJP Swipes At Congress

Bengaluru, December 30, 2025 – A political storm has erupted following remarks made by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar seemingly directed at Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, escalating tensions between the two states and drawing sharp reactions from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The controversy stems from Vijayan's criticism of a recent demolition drive in Bengaluru, which the Kerala CM described as "shocking and painful".

Vijayan had earlier condemned the demolition of Fakir Colony and Waseem Layout in Bengaluru, where Muslim families had resided for many years. He characterized the action as "bulldozer raj" and accused the Karnataka government of adopting an "anti-minority" approach, mirroring tactics he associated with the Sangh Parivar. Vijayan questioned how a Congress-led government could prioritize forced evictions over providing shelter for low-income individuals.

In response, Shivakumar rebuffed Vijayan's criticism, urging him not to interfere in Karnataka's internal affairs. While specific quotes attributed to Shivakumar vary across reports, many cite him as saying that Vijayan should not comment on matters without understanding the facts on the ground. Some reports claim Shivakumar said, "We know our city well, and we don't want to entertain slums that promote land mafia activities".

The BJP was quick to seize on the exchange, accusing the Congress of hypocrisy and inconsistency. BJP leaders highlighted the apparent rift between the Congress government in Karnataka and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala, questioning the unity of the opposition's INDIA alliance. They further alleged that the Congress's actions in Karnataka contradicted its national rhetoric on minority rights and social justice.

Shivakumar has defended the demolition drive, stating that the land in question was an encroached waste dumpsite posing serious health and environmental risks. He clarified that the government had acted to protect public land and public health, not to target any specific community. He also refuted allegations of using bulldozers, asserting that the government followed due process and acted with sensitivity, offering affected families opportunities to relocate. Shivakumar also warned against land mafia activities, who he says are attempting to exploit government land by encouraging illegal settlements.

The controversy has also drawn attention to the broader issues of urban encroachments, housing rights, and the political narratives surrounding eviction drives. While the Karnataka government insists its actions were necessary to safeguard public health and property, critics argue for more transparent communication and rehabilitation measures.

AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal sought an explanation from DK Shivakumar regarding the demolitions. Shivakumar explained that the encroached land had been evacuated and that all due processes were followed. The government has announced plans to construct new houses for those evicted, with a plan to build a complex of 200 flats.
