Union Home Minister Amit Shah has launched a strong attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal, alleging that only the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) can secure the state's borders and stop infiltration. Shah accused the TMC of deliberately obstructing border fencing by not providing land to the Border Security Force (BSF), which he claims is vital for national security.

Addressing reporters in Kolkata, Shah asserted that illegal infiltration from Bangladesh has reached alarming levels under the TMC's rule, driven by the party's pursuit of political gains. He warned that this issue poses a serious threat not only to West Bengal but to the entire nation's security. Shah questioned why illegal migrants are freely moving in villages and why the police are not taking action against them.

Shah promised to secure the Bengal border so thoroughly that "not even a bird will be able to enter the country unnoticed". He criticized the TMC's opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and alleged that the state government has failed to provide land for border fencing, despite blaming the Border Security Force (BSF) for infiltration.

India shares a nearly 4,100-kilometer border with Bangladesh, with over 2,200 kilometers running through West Bengal. Despite years of effort, significant portions of the border remain unfenced due to land acquisition hurdles and difficult terrain. Shah stated that the central government is ready to complete the fencing but is being held back by the state government's obstruction. He has reportedly written seven letters to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and held three meetings between the chief secretary of the state and the union home secretary regarding the matter.

Shah also accused the TMC government of widespread corruption, which he said has brought development in West Bengal to a standstill. He alleged that welfare schemes launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi have failed to reach people because of a "toll syndicate" operating in the state. He further claimed that "fear and corruption" have defined West Bengal for the past 14 years. Shah pointed to Bengal's economic decline, claiming the state had slipped from being the third-largest economy in the country to the twenty-second position.
