On January 1, 2026, the Sri Lanka Navy recognized eight foreign vessels, including two from India, for their crucial assistance in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah, which struck the island nation in late November 2025. The cyclone caused widespread destruction, including floods, landslides, and infrastructure collapse, and resulted in over 600 deaths. The Sri Lanka Navy's commendation highlights the importance of international cooperation during times of crisis, when local resources are strained.

Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya expressed her personal gratitude to diplomatic representatives from the countries involved. Commander Sampath, the Sri Lanka Navy spokesman, officially announced the honors, emphasizing the significant contributions of the vessels in the immediate aftermath of the disaster.

The foreign warships were in Sri Lankan waters to participate in the International Fleet Review 2025, which was held to commemorate the Sri Lanka Navy's 75th anniversary. However, as Cyclone Ditwah intensified and caused widespread devastation, the ships were promptly diverted to support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations.

The Indian Navy was among the first to respond, launching Operation Sagar Bandhu on the day Cyclone Ditwah made landfall. INS Vikrant, an indigenous aircraft carrier, and the frigate INS Udaygiri were swiftly deployed for rescue and relief efforts. Helicopters from INS Vikrant played a vital role in rescuing stranded civilians and delivering essential supplies.

Operation Sagar Bandhu delivered over 1,100 tonnes of relief material, including dry rations, tents, tarpaulins, hygiene kits, essential clothing and water purification kits. Additionally, the Indian Navy provided 14.5 tons of medicines and medical equipment and supported relief operations with 60 tons of logistical support. The Indian Air Force also contributed significantly, with Mi-17 helicopters active for over two weeks in Sri Lanka.

India's commitment to Sri Lanka's recovery extends beyond immediate relief efforts. On December 23, 2025, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced a $450 million reconstruction package for Sri Lanka. The package includes $350 million in concessional Lines of Credit and $100 million in grants, focusing on long-term infrastructure rebuilding. This financial aid aims to restore roads, railways, bridges, housing, healthcare, education, and agriculture, as well as improve disaster preparedness.

The Sri Lanka Navy's recognition of the foreign vessels underscores the importance of regional cooperation and humanitarian assistance in times of crisis. The swift response and support from India and other nations provided critical aid to Sri Lanka during a challenging period, highlighting the strong bonds between nations in the Indo-Pacific region.
