Air India has issued a warning regarding potential disruptions to its Airbus A350 routes following an incident where one of its aircraft sustained engine damage. The incident occurred on Thursday, January 15, 2026, upon landing in Delhi. The aircraft encountered a foreign object while taxiing amidst dense fog, resulting in damage to the right engine.
Flight AI101, en route from Delhi to New York (JFK), was compelled to return to Delhi shortly after takeoff due to the unexpected closure of Iranian airspace, which impacted its planned route. Upon landing in Delhi, the aircraft then encountered the foreign object. According to an Air India spokesperson, the aircraft was safely moved to its designated parking stand, ensuring the safety of all passengers and crew.
The airline has grounded the Airbus A350 for a comprehensive investigation and necessary repairs. Air India operates six Airbus A350s on key routes, including those connecting New Delhi with London, New York, and Newark. Consequently, the airline is vulnerable to disruptions affecting these routes.
A video, purportedly captured by a passenger onboard the aircraft, has surfaced, showing the aircraft stationary on the tarmac surrounded by ground staff. The damage to the engine is also visible in the video.
Air India has confirmed the incident and stated that it is proactively assisting passengers with alternative travel arrangements and refunds. The airline emphasized that safety remains its top priority and that it is committed to providing support during this time.
This incident follows a recent engine issue on December 22, 2025, when an Air India plane bound for Mumbai had to return to Delhi after being airborne for approximately one hour.
The grounding of the A350 and subsequent investigations and repairs could lead to considerable disruptions on specific routes. Engines are among the most expensive components of an aircraft, with costs potentially reaching tens of millions of dollars. It remains to be seen whether the engine will require a complete replacement.
