Samuel Eto'o Faces Four-Match Suspension: Alleged Misconduct During Afcon Tournament Results in Ban.

Samuel Eto’o, the president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), has been suspended for four matches by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) due to alleged misconduct during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match where Cameroon lost 2-0 to Morocco. The incident occurred last Friday and has resulted in both a ban and a $20,000 fine.

The CAF Disciplinary Board stated that Eto'o was guilty of violating the principles of sportsmanship, specifically citing Article 2(3) of the CAF Statutes and Article 82 of the CAF Disciplinary Code. The alleged misconduct involved Eto'o reportedly making an angry gesture regarding refereeing decisions while in the presence of CAF President Patrice Motsepe. In addition to Eto'o's actions, there was also jostling between players from both teams during the match. CAF had announced investigations into violent confrontations arising from the quarter-final matches, including Cameroon against Morocco.

FECAFOOT has responded to the decision by expressing serious concerns regarding the fairness of the process and a lack of explicit justification for the ruling. They argue that the expedited procedure leading to the decision raises questions about fundamental requirements of a fair process. FECAFOOT has firmly declared its support for Eto'o and has committed to appealing the decision, while also affirming its dedication to upholding the principles of credible disciplinary justice.

The ban means that Eto'o will not be present at the next four official CAF matches played in the context of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2025.

The Cameroonian team's performance during the match against Morocco has also come under scrutiny, with observations that the team lacked cohesion and appeared tactically uncertain, suggesting inadequate preparation.

With Cameroon out of the tournament, Morocco has advanced to the finals and will face Senegal. Egypt and Nigeria will compete for third place.
