The sudden death of Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK, in May 2022, sent shockwaves through the Indian music industry and his millions of fans. The 53-year-old singer passed away shortly after a performance in Kolkata, leaving behind a legacy of unforgettable melodies. Among those deeply affected was his close friend and fellow singer, Shaan, who has repeatedly expressed his disbelief and sorrow over the loss.
Shaan has described KK's death as an "absolute shock," emphasizing how unexpected it was, especially considering KK's healthy lifestyle. "He wouldn't smoke or drink," Shaan stated, highlighting KK's disciplined approach to life and his commitment to maintaining a work-life balance. This made the news of his sudden cardiac arrest all the more difficult to comprehend.
In the immediate aftermath of KK's passing, preliminary reports indicated a cardiac arrest as the primary cause of death. A subsequent post-mortem report cited "myocardial infarction" and revealed that KK had blockages in his coronary artery. Cholesterol accumulation had narrowed his posterior intramuscular artery, significantly affecting the heart's ability to pump blood. The post-mortem examination also revealed that KK had prolonged, pre-existing cardiac issues. It was also noted that the singer had complained of pain in his shoulder and arm for several days before his death, but he attributed it to digestive problems.
Shaan expressed frustration that no one, including KK himself, recognized the symptoms he was experiencing as potential signs of a heart attack. He recalled thinking, "Someone could have told him. This shouldn't have happened". Shaan also shared that KK kept ignoring his heart condition, mistaking it for acidity.
Despite the initial shock and disbelief, Shaan remembers KK as someone who lived life on his own terms, prioritizing his family and his music. Shaan stated that KK had very clear priorities and that he always made time for his family, often choosing to spend time with them over attending social gatherings. Shaan admitted that he often told himself that he wanted to be like KK, particularly in regard to family priorities.
In various interviews and social media posts, Shaan has shared fond memories of their times together, both professionally and personally. They sang numerous duets together, including hits like "It's The Time to Disco," "Dus Bahane," and "Koi Kahe Kehta Rahe". Shaan has also spoken about how emotional he gets when singing their duets on stage now, feeling KK's presence and connection in his renditions.
Reflecting on their last meeting, Shaan recalled that KK "was looking his usual young self" and seemed happy to be back performing live after the pandemic-related disruptions. This memory makes KK's sudden death even more poignant for Shaan, who, along with countless others, continues to mourn the loss of a remarkable talent and a cherished friend.
