Bengal to Get Ayodhya-Inspired Ram Temple, BJP MLA Claims Construction Has No Political Motivation

In West Bengal, plans are underway to construct a Ram temple modeled after the Ayodhya structure, with a BJP MLA stating that the move is not politically motivated. The proposal has emerged in Nadia district's Shantipur, where the trust overseeing the project asserts that it is inspired by Bengal's cultural traditions and is not connected to electoral politics.

According to officials involved, the temple will be built on 15 bighas of land donated by local residents Litan Bhattacharya and Pooja Banerjee. The estimated cost of the project is around ₹100 crore, and the targeted completion date is set for 2028. Arindam Bhattacharya, the BJP MLA serving as the trust's president, has stated that the initiative has been in progress since 2017 and is rooted in Bengal's Bhakti movement tradition. He emphasized Shantipur's close association with devotional traditions, highlighting how Krittibas Ojha connected Lord Ram to Bengal's emotional and cultural landscape, envisioning him as deeply Bengali in character.

Political reactions to the proposal have surfaced, with the ruling TMC criticizing the project. TMC leader Jayprakash Majumder questioned Bhattacharya's role and alleged potential misuse of funds, further claiming that the BJP does not genuinely embrace Krittibas Ojha's interpretation of Ram and describing the project as politically motivated. Bhattacharya has not responded publicly to these allegations, but he has reiterated that the initiative is cultural and religious in nature.

Similar plans for Ayodhya-style Ram temples have been proposed in other parts of West Bengal. In Nandigram, the foundation stone for a Ram temple was laid by BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari on Ram Navami day in April 2025. Additionally, posters announcing plans for an Ayodhya-style Ram temple complex in Salt Lake appeared in December 2025, promising a school, hospital, old-age home, and other welfare facilities.

These developments have occurred against the backdrop of political tensions between the BJP and TMC in West Bengal. In December 2024, the BJP announced plans to construct a Ram temple in West Bengal following TMC MLA Humayun Kabir's remarks about building a Babri Masjid-like mosque in the state. BJP leader Agnimitra Paul stated that the construction of the Ram temple should not be seen as a reaction to the proposed mosque.
