A controversy has erupted over a video clip of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Atishi, Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, concerning alleged remarks against Sikh gurus. Atishi has denied making any disrespectful remarks and has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of doctoring the video to spread misinformation.
The issue arose after BJP leaders circulated a clip alleging that Atishi insulted Guru Tegh Bahadur during a discussion on a Delhi government program commemorating the Sikh Guru's martyrdom anniversary. Atishi refuted these claims, stating that the BJP was engaging in petty politics and misusing the Guru's name. She claimed the BJP added false subtitles to the video, inserting the Guru's name where it wasn't originally spoken.
Conflicting forensic reports have added to the controversy. The Jalandhar Police registered an FIR and claimed a forensic examination revealed that Atishi did not utter the word "Guru" in the video. However, Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta asserted that an independent forensic examination confirmed the video's authenticity, finding no tampering. Gupta has called for a CBI probe into the matter. He stated that the official Assembly record matches the video clip and emphasized the importance of upholding the dignity of Sikh Gurus.
Atishi has demanded the Delhi government provide the unedited Assembly video footage to the Jalandhar court, where the matter is being heard. AAP leaders have accused the BJP of manipulating the video to divert attention from governance failures. They have demanded an apology from BJP leaders, including Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and minister Kapil Mishra, who shared the clip.
The controversy has triggered a political clash between the AAP-ruled Punjab and the BJP-led Delhi Assembly. The Punjab government has accused the BJP of twisting Atishi's remarks to incite religious sentiments. Conversely, the Delhi Assembly Speaker has accused the Punjab government of misusing state agencies to protect Atishi.
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has also entered the fray, with its president, Sukhbir Singh Badal, seeking Atishi's disqualification as an MLA. Badal claims her remarks deeply hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikh community.
Delhi AAP president Saurabh Bharadwaj has rejected the Delhi forensic report, arguing that it doesn't address the key question of whether Atishi actually uttered the word "gurus". He alleges the BJP is attempting to incite religious discord.
The Jalandhar court has ordered the removal of the video from social media platforms. The controversy continues to escalate, with both AAP and BJP accusing each other of political maneuvering and disrespect towards religious sentiments.
