Marc Guéhi has officially completed a £20 million move from Crystal Palace to Manchester City. The 25-year-old England international has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with the Sky Blues, committing his future to the club until the summer of 2031.
Guéhi's transfer to Manchester City marks the end of his four-and-a-half-year stint at Selhurst Park, where he made 188 appearances and scored 11 goals. He joined Palace from Chelsea in the summer of 2021 and quickly became a key figure, even captaining the team to a historic FA Cup and Community Shield win. His leadership also guided them through their inaugural European campaign this season.
The defender earned his first senior international cap in March 2022 against Switzerland and has since become a regular for England, having started six of his country's seven matches at Euro 2024, including the final. His 26 caps for the Three Lions represent the highest total of any senior player in Palace's history.
Guéhi expressed his gratitude to Crystal Palace, acknowledging the club's significant impact on his career. "I'm so incredibly grateful to have played at this Football Club," he said. "So many great players have come here and left their mark, and just to be someone who's stepped into this club and been able to play in front of these incredible fans... it's been such an amazing journey for me".
Manchester City's acquisition of Guéhi comes at a crucial time, as the team faces injury concerns in central defence. Rúben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, and John Stones are currently sidelined, prompting the club to recall Max Alleyne from his loan at Watford to bolster their defensive options.
Guéhi is City's second signing of the January transfer window, following the arrival of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth for an initial £62.5 million.
Prior to joining Manchester City, Guéhi was also a target for other top clubs, including Liverpool, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
Oliver Glasner, the Crystal Palace manager, expressed his disappointment over the transfer, particularly criticizing the timing and perceived lack of support from the club's board. He revealed that Guéhi would not feature in Palace's game against Sunderland as the deal neared completion.
As part of the deal that brought Guéhi to Crystal Palace in 2021, his former club Chelsea will receive 20% of the £20 million transfer fee.
"This move feels like the culmination of all the hard work I have put into my career,” Guéhi said. "I am now at the best club in England and part of an unbelievable squad of players".
