Joakim Alexandersson will continue his role as the head coach of the India U20 Women's Football Team. Alexandersson's journey with the team has already seen significant milestones, including leading both the U20 and U17 squads to AFC Asian Cup qualifications, a feat achieved after two decades.
Alexandersson's initial appointment as the Chief Coach of India Women's U20 and U17 national teams was announced by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) on December 5, 2024. His coaching stint in India began with a two-month-long U20 national camp in Bengaluru, starting December 10, 2024. The 48-year-old coach's arrival was part of an agreement between the AIFF and the Swedish Football Association.
AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey expressed gratitude to the Swedish FA for their collaboration, emphasizing the opportunities it would create for Indian women footballers. Chaubey also mentioned that four Indian women coaches, along with two goalkeeper coaches, would be working closely with Alexandersson. These coaches include Nivetha Ramadoss, Amrutha Aravind, Sradhanjali Samantaray, and Nidhi, with KK Hameed and Dipankar Choudhury as the goalkeeper coaches.
The AIFF has plans for longer camps, lasting seven to eight months, for the women's football teams and aims to arrange 10-12 exposure matches annually against competitive opponents. M Satyanarayan, AIFF Deputy Secretary General and head of National Teams, stated that this is part of a long-term plan for women's football. The AIFF is also preparing a two-year plan with Alexandersson for the Asian Games 2026 and the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026.
Alexandersson has expressed his excitement about the challenge, recognizing India's potential in football. He aims to develop Indian women's football by focusing on technical and tactical aspects, as well as fostering a deeper understanding of the game. He also appreciates the respect shown by the girls and is working to create a comfortable environment for them.
Prior to his role in India, Alexandersson had an extensive playing career as a defender, notably captaining IF Elfsborg and winning multiple trophies. He also represented Sweden at the U21 level. His coaching career began in 2014 at IF Elfsborg, where he coached various youth teams, leading them to league titles and promoting players to senior teams.
Alexandersson reflected on his journey to India, stating that the opportunity to work with youth and implement his ideas in a new environment was a significant draw. He aims to build on the progress made and prepare the team for future competitions, instilling a mindset of competing with the best teams in Asia.
