Owen Coyle is set to make a return to Jamshedpur FC as the head coach, marking his second stint with the club, ahead of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2025/26 season. The experienced coach is expected to begin a new chapter with the "Men of Steel". His assistant, Sandy Stewart, is also slated to join him in Jamshedpur and is expected to arrive on Saturday.
Coyle previously led Jamshedpur FC to their first major silverware, winning the ISL League Shield in the 2021–22 season. His return is viewed as a strategic move by the club, driven by specific circumstances. Mukul Choudhari, the CEO of Jamshedpur FC, clarified that the decision wasn't due to a lack of faith in Indian coaching talent. Choudhari highlighted the contributions of previous Indian head coaches, Khalid Jamil and Steven Dias, while emphasizing the need for caution, particularly with relegation still a possibility. He stated that Owen Coyle has done a fantastic job with the team in the past and the club is happy to have him back. Steven Dias will remain with the club as part of the technical team. Furthermore, the squad assembled for the previous Super Cup edition will largely remain intact for the upcoming ISL campaign.
Coyle is known among Indian football fans for his transformative spells with both Chennaiyin FC and Jamshedpur FC. He has a reputation in the ISL for his attacking philosophy and ability to quickly rebuild teams.
Before his return to Jamshedpur FC, Coyle had a stint with Chennaiyin FC, a team he initially joined in December 2019. During his first season with Chennaiyin FC, he took the team from the bottom of the table to the ISL final. He returned to Chennaiyin FC ahead of the 2023-24 season, guiding them to the playoffs after a four-year absence. Chennaiyin FC and Coyle mutually agreed to part ways in July 2025.
Before his initial stint with Jamshedpur FC, Coyle managed Chennaiyin FC and led them from the bottom of the table to the ISL final. Coyle's two years with Jamshedpur FC saw continuous improvement through strategic signings, promotion of young players, and strong man-management skills. In the 2020-21 season, he steered the team to 6th place, narrowly missing the top-4. The following season, 2021-22, Jamshedpur FC won the ISL League Shield.
Coyle's managerial career includes time in the English Premier League, where he managed Burnley and Bolton Wanderers. He secured Burnley's promotion to the EPL in his first season. He also coached Houston Dynamo in Major League Soccer. More recently, he coached Queen's Park Football Club in the second tier of Scottish football.
Owen Coyle began his playing career at Dumbarton and played for several clubs, including Clydebank and Airdrieonians. He also played for Bolton Wanderers in the English Premier League. He has one appearance for the Republic of Ireland national team.
