The family of the late Zubeen Garg, a celebrated cultural icon of Assam, has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a fast-tracked trial and sustained engagement with Singaporean authorities regarding the singer's death in September 2025. In a memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister on Saturday, January 24, 2026, Garg's family requested the constitution of a Special Court in Assam to ensure an expedited trial, along with continued diplomatic and legal coordination with Singapore.
The memorandum, signed by Garg's wife Garima, sister Palmee Borthakur, and uncle Manoj Borthakur, emphasizes that Garg's untimely demise has left "millions seeking clarity and lawful action". The family expressed their faith in the government's commitment to justice, dignity, and the rule of law. They are seeking the "complete truth" behind Garg's death and "strict punishment" for those found guilty.
According to reports, Singaporean authorities initiated proceedings immediately following Garg's death, with the Indian High Commission assisting in post-mortem and related procedures. Simultaneously, the family lodged a First Information Report (FIR) with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Assam, prompting the Assam government to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT). The SIT, comprised of senior officers, also traveled to Singapore as part of their investigation. The Assam Police filed a chargesheet running over 2,500 pages after nearly three months of inquiry and invoked sections related to murder based on the evidence gathered. Out of the seven people arrested in the case so far, the SIT has accused four of murder and one of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The other two have been charged with criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust for misappropriating funds.
The family has also submitted a detailed representation to the Singapore Coroner's Court, seeking clarity on the events leading up to Garg's death, including safety protocols, decision-making, and emergency response. They are specifically seeking answers regarding "opportunity lost in the final hours of Zubeen's life".
In addition to the establishment of a special court and sustained engagement with Singapore, the family has requested that no bail be granted to any of the accused until the judicial process is complete. They have also asked for the appointment of additional public prosecutors to assist the existing five-member team, ensuring the case is handled with the "highest professional competence and seriousness" to expedite the legal proceedings.
