Ranchi, January 24, 2026 - MS Dhoni, the iconic figure of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and former Indian captain, has commenced his preparations for the highly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. The 44-year-old was spotted back in the nets in Ranchi, signaling his intent to make a strong comeback after a disappointing season last year.
The Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) shared a video on their social media platforms, showing Dhoni padded up and batting in a practice session. The JSCA proudly captioned the video, "Look who is back. Pride of JSCA: Mahendra Singh Dhoni". The clip shows Dhoni in conversation with JSCA secretary Saurabh Tiwary as he gears up for his net session.
Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, has remained a pivotal part of the CSK franchise. He is one of the most influential players in the team and a core member of the leadership group. Under his captaincy, CSK has clinched five IPL titles, establishing themselves as one of the most successful teams in the league.
However, CSK had a poor showing in the previous season, finishing at the bottom of the points table with only four wins out of fourteen matches. Dhoni's individual performance was also below par, as he managed to score just 196 runs in 13 innings at an average of 24.50 and a strike rate of 135.17. He did captain the side in a few games in the absence of Ruturaj Gaikwad due to injury.
Despite the setbacks last season, Dhoni remains a formidable force in IPL history. He has amassed 5,439 runs in 278 matches, with an average of 38.80 and a strike rate of 137.45, including 24 half-centuries.
With Ruturaj Gaikwad in excellent form, CSK will be aiming to add another title to their name, and Dhoni's experience and leadership will be crucial to their success. The team has also made some strategic acquisitions, including Sanju Samson in a trade with Rajasthan Royals. Furthermore, the addition of young talents like Dewald Brevis, Ayush Mhatre, and Urvil Patel, along with record-breaking buys in Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma, has bolstered the squad.
Fans will be hoping that "Thala" will be at his best form after a tough 2025 season. Dhoni’s return to practice has undoubtedly sent a wave of excitement among CSK fans, who are eager to see their beloved captain back in action. As he prepares for his 17th IPL season, Dhoni will be looking to guide CSK to their sixth IPL title and cement his legacy as one of the greatest players in the history of the league.
