Farhan Akhtar presents: An Indian BAFTA nominee, a regional film breaking barriers and making history this year.

In a year of outstanding cinematic achievements, a regional film backed by Farhan Akhtar has emerged as India's sole contender at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards. "Boong," a Manipuri-language film, has garnered a nomination in the Best Children's and Family Film category, marking a significant milestone for Indian regional cinema on a global platform.

The nominations for the 79th British Academy Film Awards were announced on January 27, 2026, revealing a diverse and competitive field. While Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another" and Ryan Coogler's "Sinners" lead the nominations tally, "Boong"'s inclusion highlights the growing recognition of culturally rooted Asian narratives in mainstream Western awards.

Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, "Boong" tells the poignant story of a young boy from Manipur who embarks on a journey to reunite with his estranged father as a gift for his mother. Set against the backdrop of Manipur's valleys, the film delicately blends innocence with social reality, offering a child's perspective on family, loss, and hope. The film stars Gugun Kipgen in the lead role, supported by Bala Hijam, Angom Sanamatum, and Vikram Kochhar.

"Boong" is produced by Excel Entertainment, helmed by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, along with Vikesh Bhutani, Alan McAlex, and Shujaat Saudagar. Ritesh Sidhwani expressed his gratitude for the nomination, acknowledging Lakshmipriya Devi's sensitive storytelling and the film's emotional core. He emphasized the rarity of stories from the region finding space on international stages.

Prior to its BAFTA nomination, "Boong" premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024 and was showcased as the Spotlight Film at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne. The film was released in India in September 2024.

The BAFTA Film Awards ceremony is scheduled for February 22, 2026, at London's Royal Festival Hall, and will be hosted by Scottish actor and writer Alan Cumming. "Boong" faces competition from international titles such as "Arco", "Lilo & Stitch", and "Zootropolis 2" in the Best Children's and Family Film category.

"Boong"'s nomination is not only a proud moment for the film's team but also for Indian cinema, particularly regional cinema, demonstrating its potential to resonate with global audiences. The film's selection underscores the increasing acceptance and appreciation of diverse cultural narratives in the international film community.
