In a recent, candid interview with NDTV, Tamil actor Vijay, now a politician, clarified his ambitions and vision for his newly formed political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Vijay, known as Thalapathy (commander) to his fans, has formally entered politics after years of speculation, driven by a desire to address what he sees as a "corrupt" and "divisive" political culture in Tamil Nadu.
Vijay emphasized that he is not aiming to be a "kingmaker" but rather to secure a decisive victory in the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. He believes Tamil Nadu is yearning for fundamental change and that his party will work towards it. TVK's goals include upholding democracy, social justice, secularism, equality, social harmony, women's education and empowerment, a rational mindset, a two-language policy, state autonomy, preservation of natural resources, climate-conscious development, boosting manufacturing and fostering an addiction-free Tamil Nadu.
Vijay's political journey stems from his long-standing engagement in social welfare activities through the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (VMI). Founded in 2009, VMI has been involved in blood donation camps, educational support, and disaster relief efforts. Vijay clarified that politics is not merely another career for him but a sacred duty to the people.
In the NDTV interview, Vijay likely addressed the Karur stampede that occurred in September 2025 during one of his rallies. He had previously told the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that TVK was not responsible for the tragedy.
Vijay's entry into politics has been marked by both anticipation and controversy. He has been politically active for over a decade, backing candidates in assembly and local body elections. His film events have also often carried political undertones, sometimes putting him at odds with the ruling DMK.
The NDTV interview also comes at a time when Vijay's farewell film, Jana Nayagan, faces legal hurdles, with some viewing it through the lens of the Model Code of Conduct.
NDTV is hosting a Tamil Nadu Summit on January 30, 2026, in Chennai, bringing together key political figures ahead of the 2026 elections. The summit aims to provide a platform for discussions on governance, performance, and the political road ahead.
