Indore's "dancing cop," Ranjeet Singh, famed for his Michael Jackson-inspired moonwalk while managing traffic, has been demoted from his position as Acting Head Constable to Constable following a departmental inquiry. The disciplinary action was triggered by allegations made by a woman from Mumbai, who accused Singh of engaging in obscene social media chats and pressuring her to visit Indore.
The woman alleged that Singh had been sending her inappropriate messages and pressuring her to visit Indore, even offering to arrange travel and accommodation. Following the complaint, senior police officials initiated a departmental inquiry into Singh's conduct. He was also removed from field duty and attached to the Police Lines to ensure an unbiased probe.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Dandotiya confirmed that the order for demotion was issued after the probe revealed issues related to indiscipline in Singh's conduct. Indore Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters), Prakash Parihar, issued the formal order nullifying Singh's previous promotion, which had been granted in March 2021. "There were some complaints against Ranjeet Singh, in which he was found guilty and thus, he was demoted," DCP Parihar told TOI.
Ranjeet Singh gained nationwide recognition for his unique method of controlling traffic, incorporating dance moves, particularly the moonwalk, at busy intersections in Indore. His energetic style garnered him a large following on social media, with millions of fans appreciating his innovative approach to traffic management. He also appeared in TV shows.
However, his recent actions have led to a fall from grace, with the police department emphasizing that creative public engagement does not exempt law enforcement personnel from adhering to expected standards of conduct.
While Singh has not directly addressed the demotion, back in September 2025, when the allegations first surfaced, Singh released a video rejecting the charges, accusing the woman of defaming him and distorting a jovial conversation to damage his reputation. He claimed her motive was to gain popularity on social media.
Following the initial complaint, reports indicate that other women have also come forward with similar allegations of inappropriate communication, leading to a broader scrutiny of Singh's behavior by senior police authorities. The ongoing inquiry aims to further investigate all allegations and determine if any additional action is warranted.
