In the wake of heated parliamentary exchanges and a subsequent walkout, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition, has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of compromising national interests and "selling the country" through a recently finalized India-US trade deal. Speaking to reporters outside Parliament on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, Gandhi alleged that Modi was under "extreme pressure" and that the trade agreement, stalled for months, was finalized overnight due to these pressures.

Gandhi's accusations stem from the controversial India-US trade deal, which reduces tariffs on some Indian exports to the US. However, the Congress party has raised concerns about the deal's details, particularly regarding its potential impact on the agricultural sector and the lack of transparency surrounding the negotiations. They are demanding that the government make public the full text of the trade agreement and allow for a thorough parliamentary debate.

"Modi ji is rattled," Gandhi stated, suggesting the Prime Minister's image is at risk. He claimed the Prime Minister is "compromised" and has "sold the hard work" of Indian farmers and the nation's interests in this trade deal. Gandhi cited a case involving Gautam Adani in the US and the Epstein files as potential "pressure points" influencing Modi's decisions. He alleged a link between the Adani case and Modi, stating, "There is a case on Adani ji in the US, it is actually a case on Modi ji".

The parliamentary session was marked by disruptions and heated arguments. Gandhi's attempts to raise the issue of the India-China border situation and quote from what he claimed was an unpublished memoir of former Army Chief General M.M. Naravane, led to further uproar. BJP leaders objected to his references to the memoir, questioning its authenticity and accusing him of disrespecting the armed forces.

In response to the disruptions, several opposition MPs were suspended from the Lok Sabha. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized Gandhi's conduct, expressing hope that he would "mend his ways". Rijiju also stated that Rahul Gandhi can continue his speech, but what the former army chief did not say, what is not true, and what is not permitted under the rules should not be forced upon the House.

The Congress party is demanding a discussion on the India-US trade deal and has accused the government of attempting to silence the opposition. The party insists that the government take Parliament into confidence regarding the trade agreements with the U.S. and the EU. The controversy surrounding the trade deal and the parliamentary proceedings highlights the growing political tensions between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress.
