Remembering Sunil Thapa: The Legacy of a Talented Actor and Heartfelt Tributes

Sunil Thapa, a veteran actor renowned for his work in Nepali, Bollywood, and Bhojpuri cinema, passed away at the age of 68 in Kathmandu on Saturday, February 7, 2026. Thapa, who was born on May 19, 1957, suffered a cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment at Norvic Hospital.

Thapa's career spanned over four decades, during which he appeared in over 300 films. He began his journey in the mid-1970s as a model in Mumbai, working for prominent clothing brands. He also played professional football for clubs in Bombay. In addition to modeling and acting, Thapa worked as a photojournalist and covered the Bhutanese coronation in 1974.

Thapa made his Bollywood debut in 1981 with the film "Ek Duuje Ke Liye". He further solidified his presence in Hindi cinema with roles in "Aaj Ki Awaaz" (1982) and "Manav Hatya" (1986). However, he is most fondly remembered for his portrayal of Rate Kaila in the cult classic Nepali film "Chino" (1991), a role that cemented his status as a prominent figure, often playing villainous characters, in Nepali cinema.

His international recognition grew after starring alongside Priyanka Chopra in the 2014 film "Mary Kom," where he played her coach, Narjit Singh. This role earned him a Filmfare nomination and broadened his reach within the South Asian film landscape. More recently, Thapa appeared in "The Family Man Season 3".

Priyanka Chopra paid a heartfelt tribute to Thapa, acknowledging his support during a difficult period following her father's death. In an Instagram post, she wrote, "You will always be my Coach Sir. You kept me together when I had just lost my dad. You loved me and helped me through many tough days without even realizing. Your warm hugs and your laugh will always be part of my memories. Gone too young but never forgotten. Thank you for your kindness at a time that I was broken. Rest in peace Sunil Thapa. My condolences and prayers are with the family and loved ones".

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang also expressed his condolences, recognizing Thapa's significant contributions to Nepali cinema. He noted that Thapa's legacy would continue to inspire generations of artists.

News of Thapa's death has been met with widespread grief across the Nepali film industry, where he was highly regarded as an influential character actor known for redefining antagonist roles. Tributes have poured in from various members of the film fraternity, attesting to his warm personality and positive influence.
