CPI and CPM Petition Supreme Court: Demand FIR Against Himanta Due to Controversial Shooting Video

The Supreme Court of India has agreed to consider a plea filed by leaders of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India (Marxist). The plea seeks the registration of First Information Reports (FIRs) and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. This action is in response to a viral video that allegedly depicts Sarma taking aim with a rifle and firing at individuals who appear to be members of the Muslim community.

The video, which was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by the Assam BJP on February 7, 2026, shows Sarma purportedly shooting at two animated figures, one wearing a skull cap and the other sporting a beard. The post included textual phrases like "point blank shot" and "no mercy". The video sparked widespread outrage and accusations of inciting violence and communal hatred. The Assam BJP later deleted the video.

Senior advocate Nizam Pasha, representing the petitioners, brought the matter before a bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and N.V. Anjaria. Pasha argued that despite complaints being filed, no FIR had been registered. He urged the court to intervene, emphasizing the disturbing nature of the video and Sarma's alleged hate speech aimed at communal polarization.

The Chief Justice acknowledged the concerns, noting the tendency for election-related issues to be brought before the Supreme Court. The court stated it would examine the request for urgent listing and provide a date for the hearing.

The CPI and CPI(M) leaders are seeking the court's intervention, requesting the registration of FIRs against Sarma and a thorough investigation into the matter. They argue that the video and alleged hate speeches by the Assam Chief Minister warrant a serious response and a probe to ensure accountability.
