Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated sharply following reports of missile strikes launched by India into Pakistani territory on May 6, 2025. The Indian armed forces have claimed responsibility for what they are calling "Operation Sindoor," stating that they targeted nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the Indian Ministry of Defence, the strikes targeted infrastructure used for planning and directing terrorist attacks against India. They emphasized that the actions were "focused, measured, and non-escalatory," with no Pakistani military facilities targeted. India has stated that it has exercised considerable restraint in selecting targets and methods.

Pakistani security officials have confirmed that India fired missiles across the border, reporting that three locations were hit. The missiles reportedly struck locations in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and in the country's eastern Punjab province.

These events follow a deadly attack in Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, in which 26 people were killed. India has blamed Pakistan for the attack, but the Pakistani government has denied any involvement and called for a neutral investigation. The attack in Pahalgam involved armed men who opened fire in a tourist area, resulting in the deaths of 25 Indian nationals and one Nepalese citizen. It was the deadliest attack in a quarter-century in Indian-administered Kashmir.

The Indian army has posted on X, formerly Twitter, stating "justice is served" following the missile strikes. Pakistan has said it will respond to the Indian strikes.
