The family of Raj Kushwaha, the 21-year-old accused of conspiring with Sonam Raghuvanshi in the murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, in Meghalaya, vehemently denies his involvement in the crime, asserting his innocence and claiming he has been falsely implicated. This comes amidst a series of arrests and unfolding details in what authorities are calling a meticulously planned honeymoon murder.
Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi, a newly married couple from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, embarked on their honeymoon to Meghalaya on May 20, 2025. Just days into their trip, on May 23, they were reported missing, triggering an extensive search operation. Tragically, on June 2, Raja's body was discovered in a deep gorge near Wei Sawdong Falls in the East Khasi Hills district. The discovery transformed the missing person case into a murder investigation, with suspicion quickly falling on Sonam and her alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha.
According to police reports, Sonam Raghuvanshi surrendered to authorities in Uttar Pradesh, while Raj Kushwaha was apprehended in Indore. Police allege that Kushwaha orchestrated Raja's murder from Indore, staying behind to create an alibi while Sonam allegedly provided location information to the hired assailants. It's also reported that Kushwaha was in constant contact with Sonam in the days leading up to the murder, raising further suspicion.
Adding to the complexity of the case, eyewitnesses have stated that Kushwaha was seen driving a vehicle transporting people to Raja's funeral, arranged by Sonam's family. This detail has fueled public speculation and intensified scrutiny of Kushwaha's potential involvement.
However, Kushwaha's family maintains his innocence, claiming he is being wrongly accused. They assert that he has no connection to the murder and that the evidence against him is circumstantial at best. Sonam's father, Devi Singh, has also defended his daughter, asserting her innocence and demanding a CBI probe into the matter. "My daughter is innocent. I have trust in my daughter. She cannot do this (kill her husband)," he stated, suggesting that the Meghalaya government has been misrepresenting facts from the beginning.
The police have arrested several individuals in connection with the case, including Akash Rajput, Vishal Chauhan and Anand Patel. These individuals are believed to be the hired assailants who carried out the murder. Police reports indicate that Raj Kushwaha was the "handler" of these three accused, coordinating their actions from Indore.
Investigators are exploring various angles, including the possibility of an extramarital affair between Sonam and Raj, which could have served as a motive for the murder. They are also examining Sonam's financial transactions, including a large sum of money withdrawn after the wedding, and the fact that she did not book return tickets for their honeymoon trip.
As the investigation progresses, the Meghalaya police have secured custody of Raj Kushwaha and other accused for further interrogation. The case has garnered national attention, with the public eagerly awaiting further developments and the unveiling of the complete truth behind this tragic honeymoon murder.
