Jerry Adler, the veteran actor best known for his roles in The Sopranos and The Good Wife, has died at the age of 96. Adler passed away on August 23, 2025, in New York City. News of his death was shared by his family.

Born on February 4, 1929, in Brooklyn, New York, Adler came from a family deeply rooted in the theater. His great-uncle was Jacob Pavlovich Adler, a renowned Yiddish theater actor, and his cousins were Stella and Luther Adler. His father, Philip Adler, was a theater manager for numerous Broadway and touring shows.

Adler's career in the entertainment industry began in 1950, but initially, he worked behind the scenes. He was a stage manager for over 50 Broadway productions, including the iconic My Fair Lady. He later served as a production supervisor on shows like Annie and I Remember Mama. Adler also directed several shows, including Words and Music and a 1976 revival of My Fair Lady.

Despite his extensive behind-the-scenes experience, Adler didn't begin acting until his early sixties. His first television role was as Rabbi Alan Schulman in the 1990s drama Northern Exposure. However, he is most widely recognized for his role as Herman "Hesh" Rabkin, Tony Soprano's consigliere, in the HBO drama The Sopranos.

Adler's career flourished in his later years, with appearances in numerous films and television shows. His film credits include Manhattan Murder Mystery, The Public Eye, In Her Shoes, and Prime. He also had recurring roles in Mad About You, Raising Dad, Rescue Me, Transparent, and Broad City. He played Howard Lyman on The Good Wife and The Good Fight. Additionally, Adler appeared in an episode of The West Wing as Toby Ziegler's father and guest-starred on 'Til Death. His later works included roles in A Most Violent Year and Living with Yourself.

Frank J. Reilly, a friend of Adler's, shared a tribute on X, noting that Adler didn't start acting until he was 65. Reilly also mentioned that Adler had arranged for his son to get a job on The Sopranos, and years later, his son helped Adler get a role on Rescue Me. Adler's digital memorial can be found at Dignity Memorial.
