The much-anticipated Ro-Ro ferry service connecting Mumbai to the Konkan region is poised to launch in early September, potentially revolutionizing travel for both locals and tourists. Maharashtra Ports and Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane announced that the service, which will connect Mumbai to Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, is expected to be the fastest in South Asia.
Travel Time and Routes
The ferry service aims to drastically reduce travel time between Mumbai and the Konkan coast. The M2M Princess, the vessel operating the service, travels at 25 knots. Journeys that currently take 10-12 hours by road could be completed in half the time. The Mumbai to Jaigad route in Ratnagiri is estimated to take just 3 to 3.5 hours, while the Mumbai to Vijaydurg route in Sindhudurg district will take approximately 5 to 6 hours. An older report mentioned the Mumbai-Vijaydurg trip would take approximately 6 hours, compared to the current train journey of 13-14 hours. The ferry will depart from Bhaucha Dhakka in South Mumbai.
Fares and Classes
The M2M Princess offers different seating classes to cater to various budgets: * Economy Class: ₹2,500 * Premium Economy: ₹4,000 * Business Class: ₹7,500 * First Class: ₹9,000
In addition to passenger fares, there are charges for vehicles: * Four-wheeler (car): ₹6,000 * Bike: ₹1,000 * Bicycle: ₹600 * Minibus: ₹13,000 * 30-seater bus: ₹14,500 * 45-seater bus: ₹17,000 * Buses larger than 45-seaters: ₹21,000
Potential Impact and Benefits
The Ro-Ro ferry service is expected to provide a significant boost to tourism in the Konkan region. It will offer a convenient and comfortable travel option, especially for families and groups traveling together. The service aims to operate year-round, not just during the Ganeshotsav festival. By providing a faster and safer alternative to road travel, the ferry service should reduce traffic congestion on highways. Instead of facing traffic and poor road conditions, travelers can enjoy a scenic and stress-free journey.
Launch Details and Preparations
The launch date is subject to weather conditions. The launch is likely to take place on September 2nd, however, it depends on the weather. Minister Rane has stated that safety is the top priority. The M2M Princess has received almost 150 permissions from various departments, including the Union Shipping Ministry, DG Shipping, IRS, Maharashtra Maritime Board, and Mumbai Port Trust. Trial runs are planned, and excitement is building as the launch date approaches.
Historical Context
The Ro-Ro project was initially conceived during Devendra Fadnavis' tenure as Chief Minister from 2014 to 2019. The current Mahayuti government has brought the project to fruition.
While this new ferry service promises considerable advantages, it is worth noting a past Ro-Ro train service from Kolad in Maharashtra to Verna in Goa, launched by Konkan Railway, received scarce interest due to the high cost and inconvenient timing. The fare for the car was ₹7,875, plus individual passenger fares. This highlights the importance of affordable pricing and convenient scheduling for the success of such ventures.
