Union Home Minister Amit Shah honored the soldiers involved in Operation Mahadev, an operation that neutralized three terrorists linked to the Pahalgam attack. This comes after India conducted Operation Sindoor in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror strike. Shah stated that these operations send a "clear message" to the masterminds of terror.
Operation Mahadev was a joint operation by the Indian Army, CRPF, and J&K Police. It successfully neutralized three terrorists who were involved in the Pahalgam terror attack. The terrorists were identified as Suleman Shah alias 'Faizal Jatt', Abu Hamza alias 'Afghan', and Yasir alias 'Jibran'. Suleman Shah was described as an "A++ category terrorist, mastermind and lead shooter", while Abu Hamza and Yasir were both "A-grade commanders and the second and third gunman". According to Amit Shah, the three terrorists slain in Operation Mahadev were complicit in the Pahalgam incident on April 22, which claimed 26 lives.
Operation Sindoor was launched in response to the Pahalgam attack on April 22, which killed 26 civilians, including one Nepali national. Union Home Minister Amit Shah detailed India's response, revealing that Indian forces crossed 100 kilometers into Pakistan and eliminated over 125 terrorists and destroyed their hideouts. The operation was directed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Amit Shah clarified that it was a targeted anti-terror strike, not a war, noting that the Indian Air Force destroyed 11 Pakistani air bases in retaliation to cross-border shelling by Pakistan after the operation. In addition, India suspended the Indus Water Treaty, revoked SAARC visas for Pakistani nationals, and reduced Pakistani diplomatic staff strength.
Amit Shah defended the naming of "Operation Mahadev," countering accusations of religious motivation. Shah asserted that the name, along with other traditional war cries used by the Indian Army, symbolizes bravery and resistance, referencing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's historical fight against the Mughals. He cited the traditional war cries of Indian Army regiments: “Prabhu Ram Chandra Ki Jai,” “Jo Bole So Nihal,” “Jat Balwan, Jai Bhagwan,” and “Kali Mata Ki Jai,” asking if the Congress considered these slogans unacceptable as well.
The successful conclusion of Operation Mahadev is seen as a milestone in delivering long-awaited justice. Security has since been heightened across the Kashmir Valley, and investigations continue into the broader network that enabled the attack.
During a special session in the Lok Sabha, Amit Shah accused the opposition of weakening India's counter-terror efforts, highlighting the repeal of POTA in 2004, a move he said emboldened terror outfits. He also blamed Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru for historic policy missteps—from the ceasefire in 1948 that allowed the creation of POK, to returning 15,000 sq km of land in 1971, to China's UNSC membership and Aksai Chin loss in 1962.
