Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping have expressed their determination to foster bilateral relations based on mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity. The two leaders met on Sunday in Tianjin, China, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. This marks PM Modi's first visit to China in over seven years and since the Galwan clash.

During their meeting, PM Modi stated his commitment to advancing India-China relations on the foundation of mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity. He acknowledged the positive momentum gained since their meeting in Kazan last year, which has provided a positive direction to their relations. PM Modi also noted that the disengagement on the border has led to an "atmosphere of peace and stability".

Several developments signaling improving relations were highlighted during the meeting. An agreement has been reached between the Special Representatives of both countries regarding border management. The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has been resumed, and direct flights between the two countries are also being reinstated.

PM Modi emphasized the interconnectedness of the interests of 2.8 billion people in both countries through cooperation. He believes that this collaboration will pave the way for the welfare of all humanity. President Xi Jinping echoed this sentiment, stating it was a "great pleasure" to meet PM Modi again and welcomed him to China for the SCO summit.

The meeting between PM Modi and President Xi took place against the backdrop of global economic tensions, including tariffs imposed by the United States, and China's own complex relationship with the US. This context underscores the importance of India and China strengthening their bilateral ties.

Prior to the meeting with President Xi, PM Modi met with Cai Qi, Secretary of the Secretariat of the Chinese Communist Party. He was greeted warmly by members of the Indian community upon arrival in China, with chants of "Bharat Mata ki Jai" and "Vande Mataram". PM Modi also attended a performance by Chinese artists playing Indian classical musical instruments.

The discussions between the two leaders covered a wide range of topics, including political and security cooperation, as well as economic, cultural, and humanitarian ties. They also exchanged views on pressing regional and international issues. This meeting, only months after their previous encounter in Kazan, Russia, indicates a commitment from both sides to prioritize and strengthen their bilateral relationship.
