The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued an advisory for Indian nationals residing in Nepal, urging them to exercise caution in light of the recent violent protests. The advisory comes as Nepal grapples with widespread unrest, primarily led by the Gen Z population, triggered by the government's ban on several social media platforms.

The ban, which encompasses 26 social media and messaging applications including popular platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and X, has sparked outrage among young citizens who view it as an infringement on freedom of expression and a sign of growing government corruption.

In a statement released on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, the MEA stated that it is closely monitoring the developments in Nepal and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of young lives during the protests. The ministry extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured. "We are closely monitoring the developments in Nepal since yesterday and are deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased. We also wish a speedy recovery for those who were injured," the statement read.

The advisory specifically urges Indian nationals in Nepal to be vigilant and adhere to the guidelines and instructions issued by the Nepali authorities. "Indian nationals in Nepal are advised to exercise caution and adhere to the steps and guidelines issued by the Nepali authorities," the MEA added. The MEA has taken note of the curfews imposed in Kathmandu and several other cities in Nepal.

The protests, initially peaceful demonstrations, have escalated into violent clashes between demonstrators and police, prompting the deployment of the Nepali Army to secure key areas, including roads around the parliament complex in New Baneshwor. Tragically, the unrest has resulted in at least 19 deaths and over 300 injuries. In response to the escalating crisis, Nepal's Home Minister, Ramesh Lekhak, resigned, taking moral responsibility for the situation.

India, as a close friend and neighbor of Nepal, has called on all parties to exercise restraint and resolve disputes through dialogue. "We hope that all concerned will exercise restraint and address issues through peaceful means and dialogue," the MEA stated. The Indian government has also expressed its hope that all parties will prioritize peaceful means to address the ongoing issues.
