In the wake of mass jailbreaks in Nepal amid ongoing unrest, India has heightened security measures along its border with the neighboring country. The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), the Indian border guarding force, has detained a significant number of individuals attempting to cross into India.
As of Friday, September 12, 2025, the SSB has apprehended 67 inmates who escaped from various prisons in Nepal. These detentions occurred across multiple locations along the India-Nepal border, specifically in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. Among those detained was one woman.
The increased vigilance by the SSB follows reports of widespread prison breaks in Nepal, where thousands of inmates have escaped during recent anti-government protests and unrest. These protests, largely led by the "Gen Z" generation, stem from grievances over social injustice, corruption, and a government ban on social media platforms. The situation in Nepal escalated, with demonstrators storming government institutions and clashing with security forces.
In response to the jailbreaks and the potential for fugitives to enter India, the SSB has intensified its operations along the 1,751-kilometer Indo-Nepal border. This includes strict identity checks, increased patrolling, and enhanced intelligence gathering. The SSB, which operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs, is responsible for securing this porous border, which spans across Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Sikkim.
According to officials, many of the apprehended individuals attempted to cross into India without valid identification. Some have claimed to be Indian nationals, but authorities are working to verify their identities. Those detained have been handed over to local police for further investigation and legal action.
The SSB is also coordinating with its Nepalese counterpart, the Armed Forces of Nepal (APF), to manage the situation. Joint patrolling is being conducted in several locations, and the SSB has established help desks at border checkpoints to assist people stranded on either side of the border.
The recent events in Nepal have caused concern in India, with officials closely monitoring the situation and taking measures to prevent any spillover of unrest. The Bihar government has suspended the Indo-Nepal Kathmandu Maitri bus service, and the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments have placed their police forces on high alert in border districts.
