US Congressman Gregory Meeks has strongly criticized former President Donald Trump's tariffs on India, particularly the recent imposition of a 50% tariff. Meeks, a ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has warned that these tariffs endanger the vital relationship between the United States and India, a partnership that has been carefully built over the past 25 years.
Meeks voiced his concerns following a meeting with Indian Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra. He emphasized Congress's support for the US-India partnership, highlighting its strengthening through initiatives like the Quad. Meeks reaffirmed his commitment to deeper ties and expressed a shared hope for peace in Ukraine. However, he made it clear that Trump's "arbitrary tariffs" pose a significant threat to this crucial relationship.
The tariffs in question stem from India's continued import of Russian oil, which Washington alleges is helping Moscow finance its war against Ukraine. Trump initially imposed a 25% tariff on India and halted trade talks. Later, he announced an additional 25% tariff, bringing the total to 50%.
Meeks is not alone in his disapproval of Trump's tariff policies toward India. Critics argue that these tariffs are not only unjustified but also counterproductive. Instead of targeting China or other nations purchasing larger quantities of Russian oil, Trump is singling out India, harming American interests and jeopardizing the US-India relationship. Some observers suggest that this approach appears to be driven by factors unrelated to the conflict in Ukraine.
India has reacted strongly to the tariffs, deeming them "unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable". External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has pointed out that China is a larger buyer of Russian oil than India. The Indian government has stated that it will take all necessary actions to protect its national interests.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee has echoed Meeks' concerns, stating that Trump's actions are "sabotaging the US-India relationship". The committee also questioned the rationale behind the tariffs, suggesting that they may not be genuinely related to the situation in Ukraine. Some experts have called for the US to apologize to India and eliminate the tariffs entirely.
The imposition of these tariffs comes at a sensitive time in US-India relations. Despite strong bipartisan support for the partnership, trade tensions have persisted.
