The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has recently filed chargesheets against members of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) in two separate cases.
In one case, the NIA has chargesheeted two active members of the CPI (Maoist) in connection with a terror-conspiracy case related to the seizure of explosives in Jharkhand. The accused, Jaipal Deogam from West Singhbhum district in Jharkhand and Budru Padam alias Rohit Padam from Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh, were named in a second supplementary chargesheet filed before the NIA special court in Ranchi. According to the NIA, the two were actively involved in a conspiracy to commit terrorist acts. They allegedly organized meetings, extorted money from contractors and traders, and handled arms for the organization. Furthermore, they are accused of providing shelter to armed cadres of the CPI (Maoist), furthering the organization's terror and criminal activities. The case originated with the local police in March 2024, who registered it against five individuals. The NIA took over the investigation and had previously filed a chargesheet against Rajesh Deogam in July 2025. During the investigation, the NIA seized a substantial amount of cash (Rs 10.5 lakh), walkie-talkie sets, a Samsung tablet, a power bank, a radio set, levy collection receipts, pull through, gelatine sticks, and other incriminating materials. These items were discovered buried in a forest area between Husipi and Rajabhasa villages in West Singhbhum, based on disclosures made by the accused Rajesh Deogam.
In a separate case, the NIA has filed a chargesheet against Shivanand Nag and his father, Narayan Prasad Nag, in connection with the 2023 murder of Ratan Dubey, a BJP leader in Chhattisgarh. The second supplementary chargesheet was submitted to the NIA Special Court at Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh. The father-son duo has been charged under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for their active involvement in the criminal conspiracy related to Dubey's killing. The NIA investigation revealed that the Nags had a history of political, business, and personal rivalry with Dubey and were active operatives of the CPI (Maoist). Ratan Dubey was killed with hand axes during an election campaign in a crowded weekly market at Koushalnar village in the Jharaghati area of Narayanpur district in November 2023. The NIA stated that the targeted killing was aimed at disrupting the election and terrorizing the local people. The NIA's investigation has revealed the involvement of members of the Bayanar Area Committee and Barsoor Area Committee of the East Bastar Division of the CPI (Maoist), along with their over-ground workers (OGWs). The agency took over the probe in February 2024. Prior to this chargesheet, the NIA had chargesheeted Dhan Singh Korram in June 2024, and Sainuram Korram and Laluram Korram were arrested and chargesheeted in December 2024. The investigation is ongoing as the NIA continues to gather evidence and identify additional links in the conspiracy surrounding Dubey's murder.
