A tragic stampede at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, led by actor-politician Thalapathy Vijay, has resulted in the deaths of 39 people. The incident occurred on Saturday evening during a meeting for Vijay's 'Velicham Veliyeru' ('Let There Be Light') campaign. The Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian confirmed that the deceased included 16 women, 9 men, and 6 children.

The incident, described by the district administration as a "stampede-like crush," took place at Velusamypuram on the Karur–Erode highway, where thousands had gathered to hear Vijay speak. Chaos erupted while Vijay was addressing the audience, forcing him to halt his speech. Visuals from the rally showed Vijay throwing water bottles to fainting supporters and requesting police assistance as the crowd became uncontrollable.
In response to the tragedy, the Tamil Nadu government has announced Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased. Chief Minister MK Stalin visited the Government Medical College and Hospital in Karur to meet with and console the injured. Stalin also confirmed the death toll and announced that 51 people were receiving intensive treatment. Furthermore, the government has constituted an inquiry commission, headed by a retired High Court judge, to investigate the incident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sadness at the loss of life, offering his thoughts and prayers to the bereaved families and wishing a swift recovery to those injured. AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami also conveyed his condolences and instructed a former minister to provide assistance to the injured. Other political leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Kamal Haasan, also expressed their condolences.
DMK Minister TRB Rajaa alleged that the TVK organizers failed to follow the rules, leading to overcrowding and a lack of basic facilities, despite having permission for the meeting.
Vijay launched his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), in February 2024, with the intention of contesting the 2026 elections. Prior to forming TVK, Vijay had a widespread network of fan clubs that were consolidated into the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (Vijay People Organization) in 2009. This organization is responsible for most of Vijay's philanthropic activities. Vijay Makkal Iyakkam has undertaken various social welfare initiatives, including providing relief during natural disasters, offering educational awards, and supporting various community needs.
