Ladakh Administration Acts Against Sonam Wangchuk Following Reliable Information and Concerns.

The Ladakh administration has refuted allegations of unfairly targeting activist Sonam Wangchuk, asserting that actions against him and his institutions are based on solid evidence. The administration insists that law enforcement agencies are acting on "credible inputs and documentary evidence," dismissing claims of a "witch-hunt" or attempts to create a smokescreen. They are urging everyone to allow the ongoing investigations to proceed impartially.

Several issues have been raised regarding Wangchuk and the organizations he is associated with. The Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL), which Wangchuk founded, is currently under investigation for alleged financial irregularities, including foreign currency violations. The administration claims there is evidence that HIAL has been issuing degrees despite lacking recognition as a university, potentially jeopardizing students' futures, and that the institute has failed to properly disclose foreign funds in its balance sheets.

Furthermore, the license of SECMOL (Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh), another organization associated with Wangchuk, was canceled under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). The administration stated that this decision was made due to "clear evidence of multiple violations," though they also noted that legal avenues for appeal remain open.

The administration has also accused Wangchuk of making provocative remarks on his YouTube channel. These include references to Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, and allegations that he called for an "Arab Spring-type revolution". He is also accused of encouraging self-immolation and urging protestors to wear masks and hoodies, allegedly under the guise of COVID-19 precautions.

According to the administration, Wangchuk continued a hunger strike despite the government offering fresh talks on September 20, which they characterized as "an irresponsible act for personal and political gain". They also allege that he failed to calm protestors when tensions rose and that he "left the venue discreetly".

The Ladakh administration has appealed for calm and has urged all stakeholders to allow the legal process to unfold. They have expressed confidence that normalcy will return to Leh.
