The manager of Zubeen Garg, Siddhartha Sharma, and Shyamkanu Mahanta, the organizer of the North East India Festival (NEIF) in Singapore, have been remanded to 14 days' police custody in connection with the death of the singer. The Assam police arrested both individuals in the National Capital Region (NCR) and brought them to Guwahati on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
Siddhartha Sharma was apprehended in Gurugram around 1:30 a.m., while Shyamkanu Mahanta was arrested in New Delhi after arriving from Singapore around midnight on Tuesday, September 30. The Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate remanded both to 14 days in police custody. Due to the Durga Puja holidays, they were produced at the residence of the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate. The duo was then taken to the CID office for further interrogation.
The arrests follow the death of Zubeen Garg, who died on September 19, 2025, due to drowning in the sea in Singapore. The Assam government has formed a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by Special DGP M.P. Gupta, to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death. The Assam Police had issued lookout notices against Mahanta and Sharma on September 27.
According to a senior police officer, both face charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal conspiracy, and causing death by negligence. Police have also retrieved the singer's mobile phone from his manager. They will be transported to Guwahati via Delhi, where security has been increased at the airport.
Zubeen Garg's wife, Garima Saikia Garg, expressed satisfaction with the arrests and voiced her hope that the truth behind her husband's final moments would soon emerge. Speaking from Jorhat, where she attended the singer's 13th-day rituals, she stated that she has full faith in the investigating team. Zubin Garg's family has made a public appeal for justice while also urging for calm and asking people not to take matters into their own hands.
