IPS Officer Suicide Case: No Autopsy Yet, Mystery Over 'Final Note'
Chandigarh is in shock following the death of Haryana Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Y Puran Kumar, who was found dead at his residence on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. The 52-year-old IPS officer allegedly died by suicide from a gunshot wound to the head, sending shockwaves through the police fraternity and prompting a high-level investigation.
As of Wednesday, October 8, 2025, the post-mortem examination has not yet been conducted. The body has been transferred to a government hospital in Sector-16, where a medical panel is expected to conduct the autopsy. The delay adds to the intrigue surrounding the case, as investigators grapple with unanswered questions and a রহস্যময় "final note".
Kumar was discovered in the soundproofed basement of his brother-in-law's house in Sector 11, Chandigarh. His daughter found him bleeding from the head on a sofa and immediately alerted security personnel and the police. IG Pushpendra Singh, SSP Kaur, and SP-city Priyanka were among the first responders, and the scene was quickly sealed off for forensic examination.
A will and a nine-page "final note" were recovered from the scene, according to a police release. However, authorities have not disclosed any information regarding the contents of the note, fueling speculation about the potential motives behind Kumar's alleged suicide. Some reports indicate that a suicide note has not yet been recovered from the scene. The conflicting information adds another layer of complexity to the investigation.
The weapon used in the incident, believed to be his gunman's service revolver, has been seized. Investigators are considering action against the gunman for handing over the weapon to the ADG.
Kumar's wife, Amneet P Kumar, a 2001-batch IAS officer, was in Japan as part of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini's delegation when the incident occurred. She is reportedly flying back to India.
Y Puran Kumar was known as an outspoken IPS officer who had challenged his own department, even moving court and complaining against a former Haryana DGP for alleged discrimination. He was last posted as IG-Rohtak Range and was transferred to the Police Training Centre (PTC) on September 29, 2025. He went on leave and was due to join his new posting on Wednesday.
Investigators are exploring all angles, but the soundproofed basement has made it difficult to establish a precise timeline of events. Forensic experts are meticulously collecting evidence, and a scientific investigation is underway. Authorities are also examining whether recent professional developments or personal reasons may have contributed to the tragic event.
The sudden death of Y Puran Kumar has prompted শোক and disbelief among his colleagues and those who knew him. Many remembered him as a dedicated officer who contributed significantly to the state police service. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge after the post-mortem report and forensic analysis are completed.
