Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated sharply following a series of drone sightings along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB). Indian defence sources reported that drones were spotted at 26 locations, stretching from Baramulla in the north to Bhuj in the south. The Indian Army has responded with retaliatory strikes, particularly in the Jammu sector.

The drone sightings, which began on Friday, May 9, 2025, included suspected armed drones, raising concerns about potential threats to both civilian and military targets. The areas where drones were observed include Baramulla, Srinagar, Avantipora, Nagrota, Jammu, Ferozpur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Lalgarh Jatta, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bhuj, Kuarbet, and Lakhi Nala.

In one instance, an armed drone reportedly targeted a civilian area in Ferozpur, resulting in injuries to members of a local family. The injured have received medical assistance, and the area has been secured by security forces.

The Indian Army has launched strong retaliatory actions in response to these drone incursions. Defence sources indicate that the army is actively targeting Pakistani positions, especially opposite the Jammu sector. The armed forces are on high alert, employing counter-drone systems to track and neutralize aerial threats. The Ministry of Defence has stated that the situation is being closely monitored and that prompt action is being taken as necessary.

Amid the rising tensions, a temporary blackout was imposed in Jalandhar, Punjab, following reports of drone sightings. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and follow blackout protocols. Similar blackouts and red alerts have been reported in other border districts, including Ambala in Haryana and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan.

The escalating situation has led to the closure of airspace by Pakistan from 3:15 am to 12:00 pm local time on May 10. Additionally, several airports in India have been shut down, and security has been tightened at airports nationwide. Approximately 27 airports across the country were initially closed, and the government has extended the closure of 24 airports until May 15. 138 flights to and from Delhi airport were cancelled on Friday.

Adding to the severity of the situation, Pakistan's military has claimed that Indian missiles struck three of its air bases, including one near the army headquarters in Rawalpindi. Pakistan has warned India to "wait for our response". India has reportedly attacked Nur Khan base, Murid base, and Shorkot base of Pakistan.

The Indian Armed Forces are maintaining a high state of alert, utilizing counter-drone systems to track and engage aerial threats. The defence ministry has advised citizens, especially those in border areas, to stay indoors, limit unnecessary movement, and adhere to safety instructions issued by local authorities. While there is no need for panic, heightened vigilance and precaution are essential.
