A senior BJP leader in Uttar Pradesh, Babban Singh Raghuvanshi, has been removed from his position after a video surfaced online purportedly showing him in an obscene act with a dancer at a public event. The video went viral, causing outrage and prompting swift action from the party.
The clip, which appears to be from a wedding celebration, shows Raghuvanshi, 70, a former BJP candidate from the Bansdih assembly seat, sitting with a woman dancer on his lap and engaging in inappropriate behavior. He is seen touching the woman inappropriately while she sits on his lap.
The BJP took immediate action, with the expulsion letter signed by UP BJP state general secretary Govind Narayan Shukla, stating that Raghuvanshi's act has "dented" the image of the party and amounted to "indiscipline". Sanjay Mishra, the BJP Ballia district president, said the party took the matter seriously and that action would be taken against the leader.
Raghuvanshi, who also held the post of deputy chairman at the Kisan Cooperative Mill in Rasra, has denied any wrongdoing, claiming the video is doctored and part of a larger conspiracy within the party. "This is a deliberate conspiracy to malign my image. The video is fabricated. Members of MLA Ketakee Singh's family are behind this," he told reporters. He alleged that the incident took place during the wedding procession of the Durgipur village head in Bihar, an event he claims was also attended by Singh's family. "They secretly filmed this to defame me. I have never done such things. I'm an old man now," Raghuvanshi said. He also stated that he would file a police complaint to have the video's authenticity examined.
Ketakee Singh, the current BJP MLA from Bansdih, dismissed Raghuvanshi's allegations. "He is of my father's age. I am hesitant to even react to the video. The video is said to be so obscene that I do not have the courage to watch it," she said. She added that when a person is in a respectable position and knows that around 50 people are making videos, they need to be more careful and responsible.
Former IPS officer and president of the Azad Adhikar Sena, Amitabh Thakur, has demanded legal action. In a letter to the Ballia superintendent of police, Thakur called the visuals "highly obscene" and "shameful" and urged Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to order an investigation into the video's authenticity. He also demanded Raghuvanshi's removal from his position at the cooperative mill if the video is found to be genuine.
The incident has drawn sharp reactions from opposition leaders. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav attacked the BJP over the video, saying it exposed the party's "chaal charitra" (conduct and character).
The controversy has also sparked debate on social media, with many users criticizing the apparent hypocrisy of a leader who publicly promotes traditional values while allegedly engaging in inappropriate behavior.
