In a move to modernize railway infrastructure and improve passenger experience, Indian Railways is preparing to launch its first-ever digital lounge at Mumbai Central Station. This initiative by Western Railway (WR) aims to transform the waiting time for passengers into productive work intervals, catering to the needs of today's mobile professionals and aligning with the Digital India campaign.
The digital lounge, conceptualized under the theme "From Waiting to Working – Modern Comfort and Coworking for Every Journey," reimagines traditional waiting areas as tech-enabled, comfortable workspaces. It will be constructed within a 1,712-square-foot area on the station concourse, situated between the food outlets and train platforms. The lounge is designed to meet airport standards, providing a convenient and efficient space for travelers waiting for long-distance trains.
The lounge will feature a combination of communal workstations and private cubicles in a temperature-controlled environment. High-speed internet, device-charging ports, and ergonomic chairs will be available to accommodate modern work requirements. Amenities such as printing and scanning units, along with self-service vending machines offering light refreshments, will also be provided. Small conference rooms and designated event zones are being integrated to facilitate meetings and informal gatherings without disrupting rail operations.
The digital lounge will accommodate 20 to 50 users at a time and will be accessible to both ticket-holding travelers and the general public. Western Railway expects to generate approximately ₹50 lakh annually from the Mumbai Central lounge alone. The services will be offered on an hourly fee basis under a public-private partnership framework.
This project draws inspiration from similar coworking lounges at European railway stations. While executive rest areas are currently available, the introduction of a digital lounge represents a forward-looking approach to commuter services. The facility is being developed keeping in mind the digital generation who prefer working on the go and would utilize their waiting time for productive purposes.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Railways to enhance station infrastructure and provide modern amenities to commuters. As part of the ₹947 crore Station Improvement Project by Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation, identical digital lounges have been planned at other important locations such as Andheri, Goregaon, Borivali, and Bandra Terminus.
The digital lounge initiative may soon be expanded to other key stations. Railway authorities are identifying suitable spaces near commercial hubs to install similar facilities. This will significantly enhance the travel experience, especially for office-goers and business travelers, and aligns with the vision of modern, commuter-friendly stations.
The launch of the digital lounge at Mumbai Central Station marks a significant step towards modernizing railway infrastructure and enhancing passenger amenities. By providing a comfortable, convenient, and productive workspace, Indian Railways is transforming railway stations into dynamic, multifunctional spaces that cater to the diverse needs of modern travelers.
