A devastating incident in Kalyan, Maharashtra, has claimed the lives of six people after a building slab collapsed, crashing through four floors of a residential structure. The tragedy occurred on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at the Saptashrungi Building, located in the Mangalaragho Nagar area of Kalyan East, within the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) limits.
The incident took place around 2:15 PM when a slab from the fourth floor of the four-story building caved in, sending debris cascading down through the lower floors. The force of the collapse caused extensive damage and left residents trapped under the rubble.
Among the deceased are Namaswi Shrikant Shelar, a two-year-old child, Pramila Kalcharan Sahu, 56, Sunita Neelanchal Sahu, 38, Sushila Narayan Gujar, 78, Venkat Bhima Chavan, 42, and Sujata Manoj Wadi, 38. Four other people sustained injuries, including two children aged four, and are currently receiving treatment in nearby hospitals.
Emergency response teams from the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation's Fire Department and the Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF) were immediately dispatched to the scene. They initiated a search and rescue operation, working to clear the debris and locate any additional victims. KDMC Commissioner Abhinav Goel stated that twelve people were rescued in total.
A senior police inspector confirmed that the slab from the fourth floor had collapsed entirely to the ground floor. The building has been cordoned off, and structural safety checks will be conducted once the immediate rescue work is completed. Police have registered a case and are investigating the cause of the collapse.
According to Kalyan Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Vishwas Gujar, the incident occurred during flooring work on the fourth floor of the 30-year-old Shri Saptashringi building, which housed 52 families. The SDO also noted that the initial collapse of the fourth-floor slab led to a cascading effect, trapping 11 residents in the rubble.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who hails from Thane, and his son, Kalyan MP Dr. Shrikant Shinde, are closely monitoring the situation and are in contact with local authorities. Shinde has instructed officials to provide financial assistance from the District Disaster Relief Fund to the families of the deceased.
While the investigation is underway, KDMC Commissioner Abhinav Goel clarified that the building was not officially classified as hazardous, although some sources indicate the building had been declared "dangerous" and was slated to be vacated before the monsoon season. A notice had reportedly been issued to residents, but several families were still residing in the building when the collapse happened.
The structure has been evacuated, and the rescued families have been relocated to a shelter in a nearby school. The focus remains on ensuring the safety of the surrounding residents and determining the exact cause of this tragic incident.
