Gurugram commuters who use the Dwarka Expressway are facing disruptions due to urgent repair work being carried out on certain lanes. These closures are expected to cause congestion and delays, particularly for those traveling between Gurugram and Delhi. Here's a breakdown of the situation:
Daulatabad Chowk Closure:
The entry from the elevated service road at Daulatabad Chowk towards Delhi has been closed since March 18, 2025, and will remain so until April 30, 2025. This closure is to allow the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to replace an expansion joint. This is impacting commuters traveling from Sector 99 to 106 and adjoining areas of Dhankot, Basai and Kherki Majra, who will now need to take the surface road and merge onto the main expressway after Bijwasan toll plaza.
According to NHAI, the expansion joint was damaged in an accident in January, necessitating immediate but temporary repairs. However, a more thorough assessment revealed the need for a complete replacement to ensure the structure's long-term durability. While highway authorities claim that "all other traffic movements will remain unaffected" on the expressway, commuters are anticipating congestion and delays, especially during peak hours.
Alternative Routes and Potential Congestion
With the Daulatabad Chowk entry closed, traffic is expected to increase on the surface road, which is already burdened by vehicles from Old Railway Road, Daultabad Road, and New Palam Vihar Extension. Commuters are advised to seek alternative routes such as the Mehrauli-Gurugram Road and various crossings through Dwarka to ease congestion.
Concerns about Construction Quality and Maintenance
The Dwarka Expressway, built at a cost of ₹9,000 crore, has faced scrutiny regarding its construction quality and frequent repairs. In July 2024, just four months after its opening, a 70-meter stretch near Sector 102 developed minor cracks. Residents have voiced their concerns about recurring maintenance issues. The elevated road was initially seen as a major time-saver, but these closures are causing frustration and raising questions about the expressway's long-term durability.
NHAI's Response and Future Plans
NHAI officials have stated that they are committed to completing the repair work within the stipulated timeframe. They aim to ensure better quality control to prevent frequent repairs in the future. In addition to the current repairs, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has been directed to complete repairs on two crucial stretches in the city's new sectors — the road from Vatika Chowk to NH-8 and the one connecting Dwarka Expressway to Manesar — by June 15, 2025.
