Srinagar experienced an intense heat wave on Thursday, May 22, 2025, with the city recording its third-highest maximum temperature for May in the past 133 years. The mercury soared to a scorching 34.4°C, marking the hottest day of the season thus far in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. This temperature is notably 9 degrees Celsius above the normal average for this time of year.
According to the Meteorological Department, this temperature marks a significant weather event. Independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif Keng confirmed that this was the third-highest temperature ever recorded in May since record-keeping began. The previous third-highest record was 34.3°C, logged on May 28, 1971. However, the all-time highest temperature for Srinagar in May remains at 36.4°C, recorded on May 24, 1968, followed by 35.0°C on May 31, 1956.
The heatwave is not limited to Srinagar. Other parts of Jammu and Kashmir are also experiencing unusually high temperatures. Qazigund recorded a maximum of 33.5°C, marking its third-highest May temperature since 1956, although the highest ever for the town remains at 34°C, recorded in May of the previous year. Kokernag registered 33.3°C, breaking its all-time May temperature record, surpassing the previous high of 32.6°C set on May 15, 2001.
The soaring temperatures have prompted authorities to take action. The School Education Department of Kashmir has announced revised school timings. Schools within Srinagar Municipal Limits will operate from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm, while schools outside these limits and in other districts of Kashmir province will function from 9 am to 3 pm.
Health officials have issued public advisories, urging people to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, remain hydrated, wear light cotton clothing, and avoid strenuous physical activity in the heat. Residents are bracing themselves for potentially more challenging days ahead, particularly if the prevailing weather patterns continue.
The current weather forecast for Srinagar indicates some relief may be on the horizon. While Friday, May 23, 2025, is expected to be mostly cloudy with a high of 28°C, there is a chance of rain. The forecast for the following days suggests a mix of sunny and partly cloudy conditions, with temperatures remaining in the upper 20s Celsius. However, by late May, there is a higher probability of scattered thunderstorms and rain showers, which should help to bring temperatures down.
