Following the horrific terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, India has conveyed a strong message that it will not tolerate terrorism lying down. The attack, perpetrated by Pakistan-backed militants, targeted tourists and has had serious ramifications for regional stability and India-Pakistan relations.

In the wake of the attack, India launched "Operation Sindoor" targeting terror infrastructure inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. According to reports, the operation involved precision strikes on nine terrorist sites. India has emphasized that these strikes were focused and measured, carefully selected to avoid civilian or military facilities, signaling a commitment to holding those responsible accountable while preventing escalation. The international community, including key allies, were briefed on India’s actions.

Shashi Tharoor, a prominent Member of Parliament, underscored India's response, emphasizing that it was calibrated and measured. Speaking at the Indian Consulate in the US, Tharoor highlighted the all-party delegation's visit to the 9/11 Memorial as a symbol of shared solidarity and the global fight against terrorism. He stated that the visit served as a reminder of the shared problem of terrorism and demonstrated solidarity with the victims.

The Pahalgam attack has not only led to military and diplomatic actions but has also sparked widespread anger and grief within India. The objectives of the attack were clear: to disrupt peace and normalcy in Kashmir, destroy tourism, damage the Kashmiri economy, create mistrust between Kashmiris and other Indians, increase communal polarization, and distract India from its economic growth. In response, India has reaffirmed its commitment to Kashmiri integration, encouraged tourists to return to the Valley, and tightened security measures.

However, the attack has had a devastating impact on Pahalgam's tourism sector. Occupancy rates in hotels have plummeted, and many local businesses have suffered. Tourist spots, once vibrant, have become silent. Efforts are underway to revive tourism, including offering rebates and reaching out to potential visitors. The upcoming Amarnath yatra is viewed as a crucial opportunity to bring tourists back to the region.

The international community has largely stood with India in condemning the attack and recognizing the threat of cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan. Former envoy Harsh Vardhan Shringla highlighted that the strikes were focused on the infrastructure of terrorism and were precise and calibrated to minimize collateral damage.

In the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, India's response has been multi-faceted, involving military action, diplomatic outreach, and efforts to reassure and support the local population in Kashmir. The message is clear: India will not take terror attacks lightly and is committed to taking firm action against those responsible, while also working to maintain peace and stability in the region.
