Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms lashed Delhi on Sunday, May 25, 2025, leading to disruptions in flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). In response to the inclement weather, Delhi Airport issued an advisory, urging passengers to check their flight status regularly and stay in touch with airline staff for updates.
The advisory, posted on the airport's official X handle, stated that some flights were impacted due to the adverse weather conditions. The airport authorities also added that their on-ground teams were working diligently with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience.
Several flights were delayed, and some were canceled. According to Flightradar24.com, the average delay for departures exceeded 30 minutes. At least 49 flights were diverted between 11:30 PM and 4:00 AM, including 17 international flights. Low visibility and wet runways contributed to temporary airside congestion.
IndiGo also issued an advisory, stating that while the skies over Delhi had cleared and flights were operating as per schedule, delays in departures, arrivals, and ground handling might persist due to airside congestion from the previous night's weather. The airline recommended that travelers plan their journeys with sufficient buffer time, as routes to the airport may be affected by waterlogging.
The heavy rainfall caused severe waterlogging in many parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). Visuals from across the city showed cars submerged in water, particularly in areas like Minto Road and near Terminal 1 of the Delhi Airport. Traffic congestion was reported in Dhaula Kuan and other key stretches due to standing water on the roads.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert on Saturday, warning of severe weather conditions, including thunderstorms with gusty winds reaching 40–60 km/h. The city's primary weather station at Safdarjung recorded winds gusting up to 82 kmph and 81.2 mm of rain in six hours, between 11:30 pm and 5:30 am. The sudden change in weather brought relief from the stifling heat, with the minimum temperature dropping to 19.8 degrees Celsius, 6.9 notches below normal.
While flight operations have largely returned to normal, passengers are still advised to check their flight status and allow extra travel time due to potential waterlogging on routes to the airport.
