Odisha Prepares Districts for Potential Impact as Low-Pressure System Forms in Bay of Bengal.

Odisha is bracing for a spell of heavy rainfall as a low-pressure area is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts to several districts, advising them to take precautionary measures.

According to the IMD, a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal around May 27, 2025. This system is expected to intensify further over the subsequent two days, potentially leading to widespread heavy rainfall across Odisha.

In anticipation of the adverse weather conditions, the IMD has issued orange warnings for 16 districts, including Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Khordha, Puri, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Nuapada. These districts are expected to experience thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall, with wind speeds reaching 40-50 km/h, gusting to 60 km/h in some areas. A yellow warning has been issued for the remaining 14 districts of Odisha, indicating the possibility of lightning and moderate rainfall.

The IMD has cautioned that the heavy rainfall could lead to localized flooding, waterlogging, and disruption of essential services. District collectors have been advised to remain vigilant and take necessary steps to ensure the safety of residents. This includes preparing evacuation plans, stocking up on essential supplies, and ensuring that emergency services are on standby.

The anticipated rainfall is also expected to bring some relief from the prevailing hot and humid weather conditions in the state. The IMD has forecast a drop in temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next 24 hours.

The formation of the low-pressure area is also expected to influence the advancement of the southwest monsoon. The weather conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for the monsoon to become more active in the Arabian Sea, and it is expected to hit Kerala in the next 2-3 days.

The state government is closely monitoring the situation and is coordinating with various agencies to ensure a swift and effective response to any eventualities. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and advisories issued by the IMD and local authorities, and to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property. This includes avoiding travel during heavy rainfall, staying away from waterlogged areas, and taking shelter during thunderstorms.
