The Kolkata Iskcon Rath Yatra, a significant religious event, is set to witness a change in tradition as Lord Jagannath's chariot will soon be gliding on tyres typically used for Sukhoi fighter jets. This transition marks a departure from the Boeing B-747 jumbo jet tyres that have served the chariot for over half a century.
For decades, the Kolkata Rath Yatra chariot, carrying the deities of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra, has relied on the robust tyres of the Boeing 747. However, with these tyres gradually being phased out by airlines, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) sought a viable and durable alternative. Dunlop, the original provider of these tyres 53 years ago, no longer manufactures them, necessitating the search for a new solution.
After careful consideration, ISKCON has chosen tyres used in the Sukhoi Su-30 Russian fighter plane. These MRF-made tyres, each with a 4-foot diameter and weighing 110 kg, closely match the specifications of the jumbo jet tyres. While modifications to the rotor and wheel bearing will be necessary, automobile engineers are prepared to undertake these adjustments at Rajarhat, where the chariots are stationed. The goal is to have the chariot ready for the next Rath Yatra.
While Lord Jagannath's chariot awaits its new set of wheels, the chariot of Balaram will feature new iron wheels. The previous set, in service for 46 years, has been retired, with one wheel already replaced last year. Each wheel of Balaram's chariot measures 6 feet in diameter and weighs 250 kg. Together, the four wheels support the 5-tonne chariot, which was constructed in 1977. The chariot of Subhadra is expected to remain in service for several more years.
The annual Rath Yatra in Kolkata is a vibrant socio-cultural event. The deities are taken from the temple in an elaborate procession to their respective chariots. These colorfully decorated chariots are then pulled by thousands of devotees through the streets of Kolkata. The Kolkata Rath Yatra marks the beginning of the monsoon season, typically occurring in late June or early July.
ISKCON Kolkata celebrated its 53rd Rath Yatra. The celebrations began with the Pahundi ceremony, followed by a cultural program. West Bengal's Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, along with other Vaishnavas, inaugurated the event. The procession made its way to the Gundicha Temple at Brigade Ground, where an aarti was performed, and prasadam was distributed. The deities remained there for public viewing until the Ulta Rath Yatra, when they were returned to the ISKCON Kolkata temple.
The adoption of Sukhoi tyres for Lord Jagannath's chariot symbolizes a blend of tradition and modernity, ensuring the smooth continuation of this cherished festival for years to come.
