Manipur has been battling severe flooding, with the situation showing signs of improvement even as the death toll continues to climb. In the last 24 hours, at least three more fatalities have been reported, raising the total number of deaths to four since May 29, 2025. Despite the receding water levels in major rivers and a decrease in the intensity of monsoon rains, the overall impact of the floods remains widespread, affecting over 1.66 lakh people across the state.
The Manipur State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) reported that 708 villages and localities have been affected by the ongoing floods and landslides. The deluge has caused extensive damage, with 35,429 houses damaged and 162.65 hectares of cropland submerged. Landslide incidents have also increased to 169, further complicating the recovery efforts.
In response to the crisis, authorities have established 82 relief camps, with 78 currently operational, providing shelter to 4,147 evacuated individuals. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), State Police, Fire Services, and other central agencies have been deployed to conduct rescue and relief operations. Boats have been mobilized to reach inundated areas, and relief materials are being distributed to those affected. Medical relief camps have also been organized to provide healthcare services.
The Indian Army and Assam Rifles have been actively involved in "Operation Jal Rahat-II," evacuating nearly 2,500 civilians to safety since May 31, 2025. Restoration efforts are underway for National Highways and other major roads that have been affected by mudslides and landslides.
While the overall flood situation has improved, challenges remain. The overflowing Imphal, Kongba, and Nambul rivers breached several embankments earlier in the week, exacerbating the situation in the Imphal valley. Concerns persist regarding infrastructure damage, with 76 confirmed cases, and the potential for post-flood diseases.
The state government is considering long-term flood mitigation solutions to prevent such disasters from recurring annually. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge public cooperation as rescue and relief operations continue.
