A postgraduate medical student in Karnataka has been arrested for allegedly making a hoax bomb threat to her college hospital in a desperate attempt to avoid presenting a seminar. The incident, which occurred on June 4th, triggered widespread panic and a massive security operation, ultimately revealing the student's elaborate scheme.
According to reports, the private hospital in Deralakatte received five threatening calls on the morning of June 4th, at approximately 8:45 am. The anonymous caller claimed that a bomb had been planted on the premises and demanded the entire area be evacuated by 11 am. The calls immediately sent shockwaves through the hospital, causing significant alarm among doctors, staff, and patients.
In response to the threat, authorities launched a large-scale security operation. A team of 25-30 police personnel, including members of the Bomb Disposal Squad and a dog squad, were dispatched to the hospital. For nearly ten hours, they meticulously searched the entire hospital premises, including the building, parking area, and surrounding grounds. Despite their exhaustive efforts, no explosives or suspicious items were found.
What makes this case particularly unusual is that the initial complaint was filed by the very student who orchestrated the hoax, Dr. Chalasani Monika Chowdhary. She approached the Ullal police station, seemingly as a concerned party, and filed a complaint about the bomb threat. Based on her complaint, a case was registered under sections 352(2) and 352(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023.
However, the police investigation took a dramatic turn when forensic and technical analysis revealed that the threat calls had, in fact, originated from Dr. Chowdhary herself. Investigators suspect that she made the calls to avoid presenting a scheduled seminar. Further investigation revealed that the student had sent a message to a friend in Hyderabad, asking him to make a threat call to the hospital's landline. She was taken into custody on June 7th, and the mobile phone used to make the calls has been seized as evidence.
The arrest has sparked considerable discussion about the lengths to which some students will go to avoid academic commitments and the consequences of such actions. In addition to the disruption caused to the hospital and the resources wasted on the security sweep, Dr. Chowdhary now faces serious legal repercussions for her actions. The Ullal police have confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway and further details are awaited.
