Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, has expressed optimism regarding the future of India-China relations, emphasizing the deep historical ties between the two nations and acknowledging a relatively short period of divergence. Speaking in Kolkata on Sunday, June 8, 2025, Ambassador Feihong conveyed his hope for a relationship that will become "better and better."
Feihong highlighted the importance of the younger generation in cultivating stronger bilateral ties. He believes that the youth hold the key to a brighter future for India and China, stating that they provide "the reason to solve all the differences between our two sides," including the complex border issues. The ambassador was speaking at an event in Kolkata where Indian students who had demonstrated proficiency in the Chinese language were being recognized. He lauded these students, emphasizing that the young generation represents the hope for both countries.
Acknowledging existing challenges, Ambassador Feihong stressed that significant effort is required from both sides to improve relations. This includes not only governmental action but also the involvement of think tanks, students, and universities. He referenced the consensus reached between Prime Minister Modi and President Xi Jinping to promote good neighborly relations between China and India, expressing his expectation that "new development will be taking shape in the coming time."
In an interview with China Daily on April 1, 2025, marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and India, Ambassador Feihong noted that the relationship is at a pivotal moment. He urged both nations to overcome obstacles and proactively strengthen ties on a stable and healthy path. He pointed out that despite fluctuations, the overall trajectory of the relationship has maintained a positive momentum, characterized by friendly exchanges and cooperation. He also emphasized the importance of deeper coordination and cooperation in international affairs to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing nations and address global challenges.
Looking forward, Ambassador Feihong expressed his hope for the resumption of direct flights between the two countries, which have been suspended since 2020. Increased people-to-people exchanges are a key element of China's strategy, with the Chinese embassy and consulates having issued 280,000 visas to Indian citizens in the past year. Approximately 70,000 visas were issued in the first quarter of this year, reflecting a 15 percent year-on-year increase. Further exchanges involving media, think tanks, and youth are planned to foster new ideas and deepen mutual understanding. China is planning to organize a youth exchange delegation from India to visit several Chinese cities, including Beijing.
Xu Feihong assumed office as the 17th Chinese Ambassador to India in May 2024 and has since traveled extensively throughout India, engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds. His efforts reflect a commitment to fostering stronger ties and promoting mutual understanding between the two nations.
